Tanzania’s Best Beers: What to Drink Across the Country

Tanzania’s beer scene is dominated by long-standing national brands, but some regional favourites and a growing craft movement have added excitement. Whether you’re on the beaches of Zanzibar, exploring Arusha, or unwinding in Dar es Salaam, beer is a big part of the travel experience.

There’s nothing quite like chilling on the beaches of Nungwe, Zanzibar, with a cold Safari or Kilimanjaro lager in hand. If you’re looking forward to a trip to East Africa, here are some of Tanzania’s best beers to wet your whistle.

1. Safari Lager

  • Percentage ABV: 4.5%
  • Taste notes: Light, crisp, slightly grainy with a clean finish
  • Best for recommendation: First-time visitors and all-day drinking

Safari Lager is Tanzania’s best beer and one of the most widely consumed in the country. It’s easy-drinking and reliable, making it the go-to choice in most bars and restaurants.

2. Kilimanjaro Premium Lager

Kilimanjaro beer in Tanzania
  • Percentage ABV: 4.5%
  • Taste notes: Smooth, mildly malty with subtle bitterness and a refined finish
  • Best for recommendation: A slightly more premium local experience

Named after Mount Kilimanjaro, this beer is often positioned as a step up from Safari. It’s balanced, polished, and popular in urban settings.

Our Editor’s View: Kilimanjaro is my favourite Tanzanian drop. It’s the perfect session beer. Smooth and light, it’s just perfect for chilling by the pool or on the beach.

3. Serengeti Lager

  • Percentage ABV: 5.6%
  • Taste notes: Fuller-bodied with noticeable malt sweetness and a stronger finish
  • Best for recommendation: Drinkers who want a richer, stronger lager

Serengeti Lager stands out for its higher strength and bolder profile. It’s a favourite among locals who prefer a stronger beer.

4. Serengeti Lite

  • Percentage ABV: 4.0%
  • Taste notes: Light, clean, slightly citrusy with low bitterness
  • Best for recommendation: Daytime drinking or lighter preferences

Serengeti Lite is designed for easy drinking in hot coastal climates. It’s especially popular in beach destinations like Zanzibar.

5. Balimi Lager

  • Percentage ABV: 4.5%
  • Taste notes: Crisp, mildly sweet with a smooth, refreshing finish
  • Best for recommendation: Casual social drinking

Balimi is less internationally known but widely appreciated locally. It’s a dependable, no-frills lager that fits almost any occasion. You’ll find it if you head to local bars in Dar es Salaam and other cities in TZ.

6. Konyagi Beer Blend

  • Percentage ABV: Varies (typically 4–6% depending on mix)
  • Taste notes: Lager base with added warmth and slight herbal notes from the spirit
  • Best for recommendation: Adventurous drinkers exploring local drinking culture

While not a beer on its own, Konyagi (a popular Tanzanian spirit) is sometimes mixed with beer in informal settings. It reflects local experimentation and social drinking traditions.

7. Craft Beer – Crafty Dee’s

Crafty Dee's beer - one of Tanzania's best beers
  • Percentage ABV: ~4.5–6.5% (varies by brew)
  • Taste notes: Hoppy, citrus-forward, sometimes fruity or spiced depending on the batch
  • Best for recommendation: Craft beer enthusiasts seeking unique local flavours

Tanzania’s craft beer scene is still emerging, mainly centred in Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Small breweries are experimenting with pale ales, IPAs, and seasonal brews that contrast with the country’s lager-heavy market.

Our Editor’s View: Crafty Dee’s is the pick of Tanzania’s craft brew. I first encountered it during a trip to Dar, when I visited their Brew Pub on Chole Road. While there’s a lot to choose from, including blonde ale and wheat beer, their IPA is my favourite in their line-up.

Bouncing with floral notes, this amber pale ale is a beautiful drop, though a tad strong at 6%. You can start with it before moving onto the light lager, which at 3.2% is the ideal session beer.

8. Ndovu Special Malt

  • Percentage ABV: ~5.0%
  • Taste notes: Rich malt body, slightly sweet with a smooth finish
  • Best for recommendation: Drinkers who prefer malt-forward beers

Ndovu (meaning “elephant”) offers a heavier, more flavourful alternative to standard lagers, making it one of Tanzania’s best beers for evening drinking.

9. Non-Alcohol Option – Baridi Non-Alcoholic Malt

  • Percentage ABV: 0.0%
  • Taste notes: Malty, slightly sweet, soft carbonation
  • Best for recommendation: Non-drinkers or those pacing alcohol intake

Non-alcoholic options are increasingly available in Tanzania, especially in major cities. Baridi Malt is a common choice, offering a beer-like experience without the alcohol.

Final Thoughts on Tanzania’s Best Beers

For travellers, a simple path works best: start with Safari Lager, compare it with Kilimanjaro, then explore stronger options like Serengeti. If you’re in a major city, seek out craft brews for something more experimental. I highly recommend Crafty Dee’s if you’re visiting Dar. Like Kenya’s best beers, Tanzania’s are best enjoyed socially, paired with grilled meat, fresh seafood, or a sunset over the Indian Ocean.
